WORSHIP
“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
We adjust our perspective on the time and times of life according to which portion we are in. From a whole life ahead of us to winding down. It affects how we live in those times. Being care-free gives way to being overwhelmed with responsibilities. Adventure and risk surrender to attention to every motion of our body so one does not pull or strain something. We go from ‘break a leg’ to ‘don’t break a hip.’ We have a logbook of all our days lived but as time and times progress the count reverses. The growth of how old transposes to the grappling of how long is left. So, what do we do? How do we Worship God with our time? Realize, acknowledge, and live in the knowledge that HE holds all time, including ours. Live in what we have; TODAY. Wisdom says to take account of what has been done and let that refine what is left to be an act of Worship unto the God who holds all time and times in His hand. Worship, Waste, or Worry?
WISDOM
“Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.” Proverbs 18:1
My, My! The Holy Spirit is a wonderful writer. The language of the Bible is something that the surface level reader will dismiss or pass over without diving into the depths. What we miss can be monumental. Let us look into this Wisdom. I suggest that we examine the bookends of this verse. “Through desire.” I submit that there must be a want to in order to gain Wisdom. This is the outset. In the back half of the verse we see that he “seeketh and intermeddleth.” I get seeketh. A man is looking for something in order to find. But what about intermeddleth? If we break it down… inter: That prefix means to jump in the middle of, as in, interfere, interpose, interrupt, Meddleth would have meddle as its root word. Meddling is digging around to find all the dirt, the info, the 411, facts, the tea. In other words, a man looks to get in the middle of everything there is to know about Wisdom and the matters that require Wisdom. Whatever a man is in the middle of trying to solve or figure out Wisdom is what he seeks. “Eth” means constant. A constant diligent consuming search for Wisdom. Now, how does he do that? The middle part of the sentence tells us; “having separated himself.” Free from distraction, detraction, outside interaction, putting space in his place in order to have clarity and concentration. THAT is the plague of today that hinders Wisdom; distraction. I should not have to point out the primary culprit. You are holding it in your hand right now reading this post. We have to be Wise enough to know the difference between information, opinion, influence and True Wisdom. Sit with Wisdom and let her lead. Wise or foolish?
WORSHIP
“Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.” Psalm 81:1
I love this verse. According to verse 4 this was a statute in Israel, a law of the God of Jacob. Now, let us be honest not everyone has a pleasant sounding voice. That cannot be helped in some cases. I believe that is why the back half of the verse was given. A joyful noise is fully acceptable to God. As we ponder that phrase, a joyful noise, several things occur to me. There are non-musical sounds that make me smile. Children laughing when they are playing sweetly. The sound of waves upon the shore. A mountain stream gurgling over the rocks always brings a smile to my face and peace to my heart. Some other sounds are music to my ears. If a team that I support scores or wins a contest a crowd joins in a joyful noise. Perhaps one of the sweetest sounds is when one of my children says, I love you Daddy. You see, Singing to God and making a joyful noise is not always about a congregation or a crowd. I submit that music to His ears are when we are all by ourselves, just us and Him, and we let loose singing a song to the tops of our lungs when no one else is listening. Or maybe most of all when we find a place of solitude, silence, and stillness and say, Father, I love you. Worship Him aloud, joyfully.
WIDSOM
“Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.” Proverbs 17:1
How un-American is this? I would say a full house is a goal for most people. What about the sacrifices reference? Keep in mind, animals were a food source so to set aside an animal or animals for ceremonial sacrifices that the Lord required was a difficult thing to dedicate and not use as a food source. That is why it was called a ‘sacrifice.’ This phrase leads us to believe that only the wealthy would have plenty of sacrifice animals to choose from, so it was not really a sacrifice. It was abundance, opulence, riches. Wisdom says it is literally better to have peace in poverty than conflict in comforts of riches. The question then is, what have we traded for peaceful homes that honor the Lord. Slammed schedules? Maxed out investments and maxed out stress? Constant frustration and conflict in the home in pursuit of ‘the dream’? Wise or Foolish?
WORSHIP
“He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them. He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence; And smote the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham.” Psalm 78:49-51
It occurs to me this morning that the current child of God thinks that somehow God is not the same God of Genesis & Exodus. That He is perceived as somehow the God in His 20’s where He broke out doing big impressive things and amassed this huge catalog of work and piled up the wealth of creation while He was young, brash and strong. Then somehow in his 30’s God figured out how to parent His created people and swung a belt a little harder and really flexed discipline, maybe a bit much in those early days of figuring out how to do His work and raise up humanity. By the time of the kings, maybe in His 30’s, He still is ready to step up to an enemy and put the smack down on those who would insult His honor or touch His kids. Sure, there was punishment and big time consequences for their rebellion and idol worship but He told them that once they learned their lesson that He would bring them back home. Then there were His 40’s, where He just got quiet for about 400 years. He needed to deconstruct His ideals and make a fresh start for the back half of His life. Then God has a Son as an older and wiser God maybe in His early 50’s [CAUTION: DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE THAT THIS IS HOW I PERCEIVE THE LORD GOD OF HEAVEN. THIS IS HYPERBOLE TO EXPLAIN THE CURRENT PERCEPTION OF GOD BY SOME IN THIS DAY]. God is more mellow. There is so much love, grace, miracles, promises, redemption, restoration, blessing, healing, forgiveness. Oh how He has changed! (I speak as a carnal man) His 60’s were spent on His final project in establishing a church that includes everyone, left to the methods of mankind to operate as they see fit according to their culture, style and desires. Now, today, in 2026 I believe the perception is that the God of heaven is a tired, pawpaw, retiree who sits in His chair, winks & laughs at the antics of His grandkids that used to raise His anger and tells the elders to lighten up and not take things so seriously. “Oh, is that the music you kids enjoy today? Well, I more or less said that but I cannot remember…” More hugs less whoopin’s. Just talk to them and encourage them. Let them have their fun and everything will work out in the end for their benefit.” I would like to interject a theological word at this point in this analysis: HOGWASH!!!! He is still the same GOD! Lest we fall under the spell of society and modern humanistic talking points, God still hates sin. God still allows consequences for sin. God still killeth and maketh alive (1 Samuel 2:6). God is still not mocked. God still knows and sees. There is still a judgment for the believer to give an account for the deeds done in his body (2 Corinthians 5:10), and a judgment for the unbeliever who rejects Christ (Revelation 20). GOD IS NOT RETIRED, TIRED, OR SLEEPY. He is still the ‘terrible’ one (Deuteronomy 10:17). Let us keep that in mind. Worship the Unchanging One (Malachi 3:6).
WISDOM
“Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.” Proverbs 16:3
The mind, the thinking processes of mankind are a top tier topic in this day. There has never been a time when people are more affected in their thoughts than now. Neurosis and disassociation from reality is so widespread that no age group is immune. Why? Thinking. I will not presume to explain the spider web of diagnoses of the minds of men but I will take the Wisdom of Proverbs 16:3. Works established by, dedicated to, and done for the sake of the LORD affect the thoughts. Specifically, thoughts will be established. What does that mean? When something is established it is defined, fully determined, resolved, proven, secure, structured, stable, settled, trustworthy, agreed upon, and founded upon truth. That simple Wisdom is the cure for the unsettled minds of today. Wise or foolish?
“Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.” Psalm 71:8
There are two ways that things fill our mouths; things that we put in our mouth and things that come from within. “… of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” (Luke 6:45b) The truth of the matter is what we put in is what comes out. I have heard it put this way. Whatever we are full of spills out when we are jostled. A heart that is filled with gratitude will spill out thanksgiving and praise. It will be a conceding that the Lord knows all rather than a complaint for what I don’t know. Out of my mouth will come faith for help and deliverance rather than a flurry of frustration. The trend of today is a positive affirmation of self and building up one’s esteem instead of speaking praise and honor of the Lord who loves us every day, supplies our needs, stays no matter what, speaks through His Word, guides, and keeps His promises. A mouth full of Worship or …?
“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievious words stir up anger.” Proverbs 15:1
Again, words. I must admit, my reactions have not been soft enough of the time. We hear it said, and I agree, that we cannot control the actions of others but we can control our reactions. Easier, I say much easier said than done. Like me, you might suffer from a syndrome called My-Face-Gonna-Show-What-My-Brain-Be-Thinking-itis. It’s in some medical journal, I’m sure. That can be bad enough but real damage comes when I fall prey to No-Brakes-Between-My-Brain-and-My-Mouth-itis. If the regulators of my mouth are not fully engaged then it is slightly possible that my mouth, not yours of course, but my mouth can escalate a situation rather than defuse it. We could agree that it actually takes more controlled strength, also known as meekness, to keep our mouths under control than to say whatever pops out in a moment. This is a Wisdom that I am still searching for as a permanent condition. Wise or Foolish?
“Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him. A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.” Psalm 68:4-6
One of the best things about being a child of God is that logically puts us in the family of God. He is our Father. We have brothers and sisters . We are family. JAH, contraction of Jehovah, the One True God, is our Father. In that, He is our protector. We live in His presence and he dwells with us. These verses name two types of people who are described as solitary; fatherless and widows. HE is with the lonely. The Psalmist is encouraging the defenseless and alone that the Almighty God has not left us alone. He is with us. We have a family. If we have family that is alone we should act like a proper family and let them know with our presence that God is not the only one who is there for them. God set ‘the solitary in families’ for a reason. Let us fulfill our role in that reason.
“Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.” Proverbs 14:1
We have all sorts of concepts about what a wife and mother does in the home. Wisdom says that a wise woman builds her house, not the structure, floor, walls, and roof necessarily, but the family. That is what home really is, just like the church is, the people. What builds people? Instruction, encouragement, training, coaching, loving, correct correction. What ‘plucketh down’ people? To pluck means to pinch off one bit at a time.  Discouragement, criticism, demeaning, sarcasm, incorrect correction. The floor may not rot. The walls may stand for hundreds of years. The roof may hold out every drop of rain, but destruction, the destruction of the people may come from within. Careful. Wisdom says be very careful to build and not pluck down. Wise or foolish?
“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.’ Psalm 61:2
How many times have we read and prayed this Psalm? As many days as bills, forecasts, diagnoses, conflicts, tests, disagreements, and decisions have appeared. We become overwhelmed. It is too much. Over our head. Our feet swept away without footing. Sinking. It is not simply the circumstances but the inner strain that captivates and paralyzes our heart. We are reaching like Peter, “SAVE ME!” Then the hand lifts us. The nail-scarred hand. The graven hand (Is 49:16). The keeping hand (Jn 10:28). He Lifts! Higher and higher to His precious bleeding side. He lifts and leads us up and leads us higher and sets us upon Himself, the Rock, where the perspective is above and beyond the overwhelming flow of life.
“A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.” Proverbs 13:1
In one of the constant examples of Wisdom found in Proverbs, the initial impartation of wisdom comes from father to son, mother to daughter. In the cycle of life a child with a godly parent sees them as the source of truth and instruction in their life. Dad knows everything. As age progresses doubt invades. Dad is just bossing me around. He doesn’t know everything. Then the teens and 20’s roll in. Dad is clueless. How did he ever do anything in life. I know better. Eventually real life layers its tentacles around the heart, mind, and body of a person in the form of work, marriage, money, and children. Dad, can I ask you a question? How did you… As the cycles continue to turn, it turns out, my godly Dad and Mom knew everything after all. The same is true with God and His children. If we will not obey and heed the wisdom of a godly earthly parent, we will not heed nor obey the Heavenly Father. Wise or Scorner?
“How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.” Psalm 36:7
Historians would tell us that when a king conquered another king, the victorious would take the robe of the defeated and have it sown to the end of his own. It appeared as and was referred to as his wings. In ancient times a king would spread his kingly garment over someone to protect them as they came under his authority. The King of kings will protect us under the shadow of His wings.
“Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.” Proverbs 8:33
“Wisdom” speaks directly of ‘herself’ through the whole chapter. I wondered why in verses 1-3 that Wisdom was referred to as ‘she.’ Could it be that Solomon learned so much wisdom from his mother? Possibly. Wisdom is explained as the instructor of all who will hear, the hater of evil, the strength of kings, the source of riches, the leader unto righteousness and sound judgment, and supplier of treasure. Wisdom was possessed of the LORD in the beginning, ‘before his works of old.’ Creation was worked by Wisdom. To those who will hear, Wisdom will be a blessing to those that keep her ways.
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7
