Another Promise Kept

Good Resurrection Morning!  Our hope and prayer is that the scene of His cross, the sacrifice of His body, the sufficiency of His blood, the surety of His foretold resurrection has captivated your heart and mind in these last several days.  Every last bit of what Christ did for us in His Crucifixion, Burial, and Resurrection went just exactly as Jesus had told His disciples that it would.  Let’s talk about that…

In the gospel of John chapter 2 Jesus is confronting the money changers in the Temple in Jerusalem.  Verses 19 through 22 says, “Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.  Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body.  When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.”  In chapter 20 verse 8 and 9 of John when Jesus Christ rose again by His own power and an angel rolled away the stone to reveal the tomb was empty, that beloved disciple “...saw, and believed.  For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.”  He kept His promise.

The foundation of trust in anyone is if they tell the truth and keep their promises.  Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).  He IS the Truth.  Everything He said He would do, He did and has done… and will do.  Rising from the dead was simply Jesus keeping another promise.  If that promise can be kept, then there is no reason to think that we can do anything but trust that He will keep every other promise He has made.

One last thing.  Notice that in both the before and after verses we referred to there was a reference to the knowledge of the scriptures;  For as yet they knew not the scripture… and they believed the scripture…  Cleary, Jesus intends for us to read, study and know His word so that we can discover His promises, see how He keeps His promises and Hope in the promises that He has laid out in the future (I Thessalonians 4).  His resurrection was not just about Him.  It was about a promissory note that would be granted to all who call upon His name and trust His promise of salvation.  His power to raise us up in the last days is contingent upon the power of His own resurrection.  In fact, if we go back to Matthew 27:51-53 we see that His power of resurrection was so strong that other people in the graveyards around Jerusalem rose from the dead and walked into town and were recorded as being witnessed by many.

There is power in His promises.  He promised He would rise from the dead and He did.  He promised His children that one day “the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”  That is another promise that He will keep.  Fear not, my brothers and sisters.  Jesus Christ has never broken or come short of any of His promises and He is not going to start now!  Get Ready To RISE!
